The art of reflexology was foreign to me, until I began to do some research into the study of reflexology for my daughter, who was interested in pursuing a career in massage therapy or other natural therapies.
My decision to study the art of reflexology and become the best reflexologist I could came in the early morning hours after a restless night of tossing and turning.
I immediately signed up for the next available class, and was about to embark on a new adventure, with no idea where it would lead me.
It had been at least twelve years since I had taken any classes, and this was in a totally different direction, of any past working experience I had.
Embarking on a New Life Direction
At age 53, a lot of people around me, thought I was perhaps a little eccentric, to be studying not only an area I had no background experience in, but one that was also controversial. “After all, how could a foot rub have any therapeutic effect on the body.” “This was a total waste of time and money.” These were some of the comments I heard when I mentioned my desire to learn reflexology.
My greatest asset was my total ignorance of reflexology. I entered my studies with an open mind, with no past experiences to influence what I was about to witness for myself.
Studies of anatomy, body systems, what they did and the effect of having them not working to there optimum, as well as “hands on feet” practice of new skills were just the tip of the iceberg, of what there was to be learned from each person I would encounter on my journey.
The study of reflexology progressed, and I began to practice my art on fellow students, and in return received the touch of reflexology on my own feet. I quickly noticed just how reflexology assisted the body in becoming balanced, just as a tune up on a car has it running smoother. Many people do not even consider that we also need daily attention, nourishing and nurturing to maintain a healthy body, mind and spirit. With proper care and attention, similar to what we would give to our vehicles, our life could be stress free, looking forward to each day with positive attitude and increased energy. Reflexology has reinforced this concept over and over again.
Body Rebalancing With Reflexology
I have been blessed or perhaps cursed with a very oily skin, sometimes in competition with the best oil wells, in production. Mascara was used sparsely on special occasions, as the naturally produced oil would migrate down my eyelids, resulting in eye irritation and river of mascara flowing down my face. My body responded to reflexology, by balancing the production of oil. I now let the Alberta oil fields do their job while I enjoy the luxury of mascara on my eyelashes.
There has been decline in the occurrence, the length and severity of colds and sinus agony with consistent, regular reflexology treatment, including self-treatments of the sinus reflexes. The length of a common cold for me is now in the range of 3 top 4 days, as compared to a minimum of 10 days of suffering prior to reflexology. Sinus problems when they do occur, is now a discomfort, not a journey through a torture chamber.
How Reflexology Has Changed My Life
Nature created me as a quiet person, who would never “toot my own horn”, even when I knew that I had excelled in something. Can you imagine my surprise, when I heard a voice coming from within me, declaring that I am a certified reflexologist, who enjoys the art and is very good at practicing reflexology?
The journey in reflexology for me has just begun. I now have gone on to further studies in pathology and reflexology, ear reflexology, and expanded the art of reflexology to include the teaching of infant massage to parents, so that the benefits of reflexology can be enjoyed by all. I have enjoyed visiting new landscapes and making many new friends, as I attend seminars across Canada to hone my skills in reflexology.
Reflexology has made an immense difference in my life, while the benefits that I have seen in my clientele are as varied as the individuals themselves. A terminally ill person who endured pain from cancer treatment for ten years, had it disappear after just one treatment. Migraines have been reduced, eliminated, communication with family units increased, emotional storms calmed, fevers reduced, surgery no longer needed, individuals going from recluse to enjoying chatting with their neighbours. Arthritis pain has been greatly reduced, stress levels reduced so quickly that several clients fall asleep or enjoy a deep meditative state while I carefully and gently work on their feet and /or ears. Many people that have found relief with reflexology, were not believers before they experienced it for themselves. The caring touch of my hands trained in the skills of reflexology, have shown many the benefits that reflexology can provide. Each person in return for the privilege of sharing reflexology with them, has in return given me the gift of their knowledge and experience.
Reflexology does work for everyone in a unique, beneficial way. The future and popularity of reflexology is like a beautiful sunrise. As time goes on, it will rise high and shine bright in the choice of complimentary therapies.
