Healing Touch is gaining popularity around the world as a pleasant, safe complementary therapy. Everyone can benefit from Healing Touch. Healing Touch helps with any kind of health complaint or problem. It can be used by itself, or in conjunction with any other type of treatment or therapy. Ir can be performed anywhere: in hospitals, clinics, hospices, care homes, offices, schools, at home – even at accident scenes.
What is Healing Touch?
Healing Touch is a non-invasive, energy-based therapy using light touch and working in and around the body’s energy field to stimulate self-healing in the recipient. Developed in the early 1980s by Colorado nurse Janet Mentgen, Healing Touch is taught to and practiced by nurses and other health-care professionals and healers world-wide. Healing Touch is rapidly gaining acceptance in hospitals and the medical community as an effective, complementary therapy. It is also offered by health-care professionals and healers in private practice.
The healing power of touch is not a new concept. It has been used throughout history, from ancient to modern times. The “laying on of hands” was used by priests and medicine men/women in ancient cultures to heal the sick. Christ used touch to perform healing “miracles.” When babies cry, we hold them. When children hurt themselves, mommy “kisses it better.” If we hurt ourselves, we immediately put our hand on the injury site. A hug, holding a hand, or a light touch to an arm or shoulder helps someone feel better when things aren’t quite right.
The difference between a simple, caring touch and Healing Touch is that the Healing Touch practitioner uses her/his hands to consciously direct energy with the intent of helping the person receiving the Healing Touch treatment. The conscious direction of energy through a practitioner’s hands stimulates self-healing in the recipient.
How does Healing Touch work?
Healing Touch works from a multi-level energy perspective rather than a purely physical one and is based on the belief that we have energy fields surrounding and interpenetrating our physical bodies. Illness and injury are essentially imbalances in or disruptions to the healthy flow of energy in those fields. Healing occurs when the proper flow of energy is re-established.
Basically, all healing is self-healing. Our bodies have the wisdom and ability to heal themselves.
Doctors and other health care professionals simply direct and facilitate that self-healing process. For example, a physician may “set” a broken bone, but it is the body itself that actually heals the break. A Healing Touch practitioner uses her hands to help realign a person’s energy field, eliminating any blocks and re-establishing a balanced flow of the energy so that the self-healing mechanisms “kick in” and do their job.
Healing Touch works to balance an individual’s energy on all levels – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Therefore healing often occurs on more than just the physical level.
How can Healing Touch help?
Scientific research has shown that Healing Touch is effective in promoting deep relaxation, managing stress, relieving pain, accelerating wound and fracture healing, and strengthening the immune system. Because Healing Touch has been shown to strengthen the immune system, it can be used as an effective preventive therapy to help maintain health and prevent illness.
On an emotional level, Healing Touch promotes a general sense of well-being and is helpful with depression, anxiety, anger management, grief and other emotional complaints. On a mental level, Healing Touch helps with mental stress and confusion, helping a person feel “clear headed” and able to regain a sense of focus. Healing Touch is also effective in enhancing spiritual development.
What to Expect
You will be asked some questions about your medical history and general lifestyle. You then lay, fully clothed, on a massage table. (Healing Touch can also be done with you sitting in a chair or laying on a bed. If you are uncomfortable with being touched, Healing Touch can be done without actually touching you.)
Soft, relaxing music may be played, and you may talk or simply rest during the session. The practitioner will assess the energy field around your body, noting any imbalances or differences. Then she will use a combination of light touch and moving her hands over and around your body to balance the energy patterns in your whole body.
Then the practitioner will work on specific areas or problems. If you have back problems, you will be asked to turn over so the practitioner can work directly on your back and spine.
During the treatment, you will become very relaxed and may feel a variety of sensations, including heat, coolness, tingling, pressure or pulling.
Colors or images may appear in your mind’s eye. What a person experiences when receiving Healing Touch is unique to that person, so it is hard to describe exactly what you may feel.
A treatment session lasts between 45- 60 minutes for an adult. For elderly people and children, a session is significantly shorter, between 10-25 minutes. It takes 24-36 hours to allow your realigned energy to fully integrate, so you may not notice any dramatic changes right away. However, you should notice that you “feel better” on some level.
Try Healing Touch on Yourself
Try these easy, quick Healing Touch technique on yourself, family members, friends, and even your pets and house plants! take a few deep breaths and briskly rub your hands together to stimulate the energy in them.
Unruffling
Holding your hands two to six inches away from your body, gently brush or sweep them over and away from the area of discomfort. Continue this gentle brushing or sweeping motion until the discomfort has eased.
Modulating (Directing) Energy
For acute pain relief, hold your hand directly on or slightly above the area of discomfort with the intent of drawing the pain out. When the pain has eased, hold your hand over the site for a couple more minutes to “seal” the area. You can then unruffle (see above) the area.
